Are You Physically Fit for Space Travel?
The idea of floating in space is thrilling—but before liftoff, space tourism companies must confirm you’re physically ready. Here’s what to know about space tourism medical requirements.
General Health Standards
Most companies don’t require astronaut-level fitness, but you’ll need:
-
Good cardiovascular health
-
Normal blood pressure levels
-
No recent history of serious conditions (e.g., heart disease, epilepsy)
You’ll likely undergo a basic physical and fill out a medical questionnaire.
Suborbital vs Orbital Differences
-
Suborbital Flights: Minimal physical screening; training is short and focused on cabin orientation.
-
Orbital Flights: More extensive exams required. SpaceX and Axiom missions may include:
-
Cardiac stress tests
-
Bloodwork and imaging
-
Neurological screening
-
Age & Disability Considerations
There are no strict age limits. Passengers from 18 to 90+ have already flown. Some programs accommodate travelers with disabilities, depending on the flight profile.
